本日は、香盤時計についてお話致します。

Today, I'll talking about incense clocks.

香盤時計は香時計、時香盤、常香盤とも呼ばれ、古くは６世紀頃の中国で使われており、日本に伝来した当時のものが正倉院に残されているそうです。

Incense clock is called "香時計" "時香盤" "常香盤" in Japanease. It was used in China around the 6th century, and the originals that introduced to Japan are preserved in Shosoin.

正倉院の香盤時計には古代インドの文字が刻まれていることから、インドで作られたものが中国を経て、日本に伝わったと考えられているようです。

The incense clock at Shosoin is engraved with ancient Indian characters. It is believed that it was made in India and then passed on to China before being introduced to Japan.

抹香の燃えるスピードが一定であることを利用して、燃えた長さから時刻を読み取っていたのです。

The time was determined by the length of the incense had burned.

時間に追われずに香りとともに時間を把握するのも良いですね。

It's also nice to be able to keep track of time through the scent without being rushed.
